Real Estate Assessed Value Appeals in Mecklenburg or Iredell County
Recently, homeowners across the Charlotte and Lake Norman areas have opened their mail to big surprise! The assessed tax value of many homes has increased. A countywide tax revaluation has taken place with an effective date of January 1, 2019. You should have already received your notice of 2019 Real Estate Assessed Value in the mail. Was it good news or bad news? For some, it may cause their taxes to go up by thousands of dollars a year.
Should I protest my Real Estate Assessed Value?
You should strongly consider an appeal if:
- The values of properties that are selling are lower than your assessed value, or…
- The condition of your home is below the condition of homes that are selling for
the same as your valuation.
How do I appeal and what are the important dates and deadlines?
Depending on where you live, the procedures and deadlines differ:
In Mecklenburg County:
- January 23, 2019:Notice of 2019 Real Estate Assessed Value was mailed.
- Informal review: You can request an informal review of your assessed value within 30 days of receiving your notice. Do this by February 22, 2019!You can do so from the Property Information Portal (https://property.spatialest.com/nc/mecklenburg/#/.) Navigate to your property listing, then click “Make an Inquiry” and follow the step-by-step process.
- May 20, 2019:Formal Appeals Deadline. If you wish to skip the informal review, you can file a Formal Appeal Requestwith the Board of Equalization and Review (BER) by May 20, 2019.

- Appeal within 30 days of notice. Do this by March 1, 2019!
